Biography

Nick Schroeck, director of the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic, teaches the clinic, advanced clinic, Environmental Law and Energy Law Current Topics Seminar at Wayne State University Law School. In addition to his teaching, Schroeck supervises clinic student attorneys on a variety of environmental law and policy matters. He also is executive director of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, a 501(c)(3) public interest environmental law organization that works in partnership with the clinic.

Schroeck has represented the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Law and Policy Center, Michigan Environmental Council, National Wildlife Federation, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, among others. Licensed to practice in Michigan, he has litigated cases before administrative tribunals; in Circuit Court, Court of Appeals and state Supreme Court; and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. His areas or expertise include air pollution, water pollution, environmental justice, transportation and citizen suit enforcement.

He is a sought-after expert and commentator on environmental matters. Schroeck is a regular in-studio guest on WDET-FM 101.9 in Detroit, and he is frequently quoted by The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. He has provided analysis for The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time and National Public Radio, including a featured appearance on “Science Friday.”

In 2014, Schroeck was a visiting professor at the Northwest University of Politics and Law in Xi'an China, teaching International Environmental Law. He also has taught International Environmental Law for Southwestern Law School's Vancouver Study Abroad program at the University of British Columbia.

Previously, Schroeck was a regional representative and attorney for the National Wildlife Federation, America's largest conservation organization, out of its Great Lakes Natural Resources Center in Ann Arbor. Prior to joining the federation, he was a Sea Grant Fellow with the Great Lakes Commission. During law school, Schroeck interned with the Michigan Attorney General's office, where he assisted with the prosecution of environmental crimes. He also served as a student attorney and as board secretary of the Free Legal Aid Clinic. Prior to law school, Schroeck worked in electoral politics as a field coordinator on the 2002 Connecticut governor's race and as a paralegal at a law firm in Washington, D.C.

Schroeck is a graduate of Wayne Law. He also holds a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, in urban studies and political science from Elmhurst College in Illinois. While at Elmhurst, he had the distinction to study for a year in the Politics Honors College at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

An avid reader, Schroeck enjoys travel, gardening and cooking with his wife, Elizabeth, who is a third-grade teacher in Rochester. Proud supporters of Detroit's cultural gems, you are likely to run into them at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra or Detroit Lions games.

Nick Schroeck has been asked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to serve on a site review team for the National Sea Grant Law Center. The National Sea Grant College Program periodically reviews all of their colleges and centers for management and collaboration. He'll serve as an external panelist to help ensure that the program is well run and well connected. The site review will take place Feb. 10-11 at the center's offices at the University of Mississippi Law School.

Nick Schroeck has been appointed as vice chair for the Water Resources Committee for the American Bar Association's 2014-15 The Year in Review publication of the Section of Envrionment, Energy and Resources. The Year in Review provides broad coverage of the changes in law and current events in the section's areas of practice. All substantive committees have the opportunity to submit a chapter, and the vice chair oversees the chapter's preparation.

The group comprises more than 1,000 legislators from all 50 states and the Canadian province of Ontario.

Nick Schroeck was a featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Four Township Water Resources Council'a annual meeting on April 29.  The council is dedicated to protecting water quality in Barry and Prairieville townships in Barry County and Richland and Ross townships in Kalamazoo County. Schroeck spoke on federal, state and local regulations as they pertain to hydraulic fracturing (fracking), including environmental and health risks and protection, as well as issues involving oil and gas leases and contracts.

Nick Schroeck kicked off the opening panel on emerging challenges facing Great Lakes governance at Indiana University's Robert H. McKinney School of Law's sixth annual Spring Environmental Symposium on the topic of Great Lakes Natural Resource Governance held March 1. Later this month, Schroeck will bring a Great Lakes perspective to the American Bar Association's 42nd Annual Spring Conference hosted by the Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources. He'll be discussing stormwater management. The conference is March 21-23 in Salt Lake City.

Nick Schroeck will speak at 6 p.m. March 14 at the Great Lakes Regional Training Center at Washtenaw Community College about Great Lakes water rights and conservation and the controversial practice of "fracking" to extract oil and gas from wells. The event will be free and open to the public. Schroeck is the executive director of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, and the event is one in a series sponsored by the WCC Faculty Sustainability Literacy Task Force about environmental issues.

On Sept. 26, he'll be debating Becky Norton Dunlop of the Heritage Foundation at Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee on the issue of hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The event is sponsored by the Federalist Society and the Marquette Environmental Law Society. On Nov. 2, Schroeck will speak on a panel at the University of Toledo Law School's Great Lakes Water Conference on the topic of the U.S. and Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. And on Nov. 16, Schroeck will speak at Case Western Law School in Cleveland, Ohio, at a law review symposium. The topic will be on oil and gas development, including fracking. For the symposium, he, with recent alumna Stephanie Karisny, will be publishing an article on the topic in the Case Law Review.
