Former Sen. Carl Levin issues statement on John Glenn's passing

Former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan released the following statement on the passing of astronaut and former U.S. Sen. John Glenn:

"John Glenn was one of the finest, most noble human beings I ever met. His passion for public service was expressed in brave deeds in the military service and space exploration and political courage in the Senate. He stood up to political demagoguery here at home with the same quiet firmness he applied to foreign dictatorships. His genuine decency was legendary. His quiet and unassuming nature was truly inspirational. John's love for our nation was exceeded only by his love for Annie. Barb and my hearts are full as we think about John's great heart now being stilled. The fact that so many across our land will be grieving with them will hopefully help Annie and the family cope with their loss."

Carl Levin served with John Glenn in the U.S. Senate from 1979 until Glenn retired in 1999. Levin retired in 2015 after representing Michigan for 36 years. Levin is chair of the Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School and serves on the law school faculty as distinguished legislator in residence. He is senior counsel with Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn.
