Brian Aquart '09, recently joined the Human Resources Administration in the Department of Social Services in New York City as deputy director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Office. Aquart helps to ensure that HRA maintains a respectful work environment, makes employment decisions fairly and with equal opportunity, and makes reasonable accommodations for qualified employees. In his role at HRA, Aquart oversees investigations of discrimination, harassment and retaliation complaints and the implementation of reasonable accommodations.

Marilena David-Martin '09, was awarded with the Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer Award by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section. The award honors commitment to public service, exemplary service to the State Bar and exceptional professional accomplishments. David-Martin, an active community volunteer, is an assistant defender at the State Appellate Defender Office in Detroit. She also was awarded the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan Justice for All Award for her work investigating convictions involving the now closed Detroit Crime Lab.

Aimee Jachym '09, rejoined Miller Canfield as an associate in the Kalamazoo office. Jachym was previously with Miller Canfield's Corporate Group from 2009-11, before spending two years in South Korea serving as president and chief administrator of Korean Kids and Orphanage Outreach Mission), a nonprofit she founded in 2007. Upon returning to the United States in 2013, she was a commercial contracts manager for Parker Hannifin Corp.'s Aerospace Group Hydraulics Systems Division in Kalamazoo, where she negotiated settlements and interpreted contracts, provided export controls compliance support and assisted with global business development.

Michael Taylor '08, was confirmed as mayor of Sterling Heights to serve out the term of RIchard Notte, who died in October. Taylor was first elected to the council at 2009 when he was 26 -- the youngest person to be elected to the council in the city's history. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2013 with the highest number of votes, earning him the mayor pro-tem position. Taylor is a senior attorney with the Mount Clemens-based law firm of Davis Burket Savage Listman Brennan, where he represents individuals and businesses on a wide range of civil matters, focusing on civil litigation, corporate law, estate planning and property tax appeals.

Robert Riley '08, an associate in the Litigation Department at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, was elected president by the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy's recently formed board of directors. The center is an evidence-based program that improves outcomes for children by safely reducing the need for them to enter or remain in foster care. The center uses legal and social work advocacy to empower families to overcome the underlying problems they are facing that put the children in their care at risk for out of home placements. Riley has served as pro bono counsel for Legal Services of Michigan, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, the Michigan State Planning Body for Legal Services and the American Civil Liberties Union.

He'll serve on the 15-member board for the nonprofit group, which was established in 2007 as a joint initiative of the U.S. State Department  and leading national law firms to empower Afghan lawyers to contribute to the establishment of the rule of law in their nation. Derek Meinecke '01, was appointed chief judge of the 44th District Court. Meinecke won election to the court in 2012, after serving for more than 10 years in the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in the special victims unit, focusing on domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse and sexual assault. In 2011, he won the Courage to Lead Award from Oakland County S.A.V.E. (Serving Adults who are Vulnerable and/or Elderly) for his efforts to prevent elder abuse, and in 2009 he awarded the Domestic Violence Prevention Award from Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence for his work to end domestic violence, prosecute abusers, empower victims and educate police officers and members of the community about the dynamics of abuse.
