Wayne Law scholarships

The following scholarships are awarded to current students by the Law School and are subject to available funding. Application materials should be submitted no later than 5 p.m., April 14, 2017. Please note: students with scholarships covering 100% tuition are not eligible to apply.

Along with the scholarship application, include:

  1. A personal statement explaining how you meet the criteria for each scholarship
  2. A current résumé
  3. An unofficial copy of your Law School transcript. First-year law students don't need to submit a transcript.

Robert & Marie Fayz Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $500
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the achievements of and provide financial assistance to full- or part-time J.D. and LL.M. students who speak Arabic or have taken a leadership role in the Middle Eastern Law Students Association or the Muslim Law Students Association. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Michael L. and Peggy Goldberg Pitt Award
Award amount: Up to $9,000
This award was created by Michael J. Pitt, '74, and Peggy Goldberg Pitt to provide financial assistance and special services to law students with physical disabilities.


Bernard Gottfried Memorial Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,000
This scholarship is funded by gifts to the Law School and proceeds from the Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium sponsored by the National Labor Relations Board, Region Seven, with the participation of the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section. The award will be made to a student who has demonstrated a serious interest in and expects to pursue a career in the field of labor and employment law.

Brass Ring Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: TBD
This award was created by Wayne Law Class of 1998 alumnae Dianna Collins, Marcy Hahn, Stacey King, Samantha Lord and Mary Margaret O’Donnell in honor of their enduring friendship. It is awarded to a first-year law student in good standing to provide financial assistance and to inspire all students to value friendship, strive to live life to its fullest potential and aspire to achieve their own brass ring, whatever form that may take. 

Iannotti Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $500
​Daniel V. Iannotti, '79, a long-time supporter of the Law School, established this award soon after graduation. This scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student who has demonstrated qualities of scholarship and character and is a member of the Italian American Law Student Association.

Thomas H. Oehmke Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $500 
This scholarship will award 10 second, third or fourth-year students up to $500 each. Eligible students will have a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5 and will be a resident of Michigan for at least 12 months immediately preceding admission to Wayne Law.

The Honorable Daniel S. and Sarah Opperman Endowed Scholarship
Award: Up to $2,000
This scholarship’s primary purpose is to recognize the dedication of students participating in judicial clerkships. Applicants must be full time and must have served as a judicial clerk while enrolled at Wayne Law.

Ida and Benjamin Alpert Foundation Annual Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
The Ida and Benjamin Alpert Foundation, along with Mr. and Mrs. Myron Alpert, established the Ida and Benjamin Alpert Foundation Annual Scholarship to recognize outstanding scholarly achievement and encourage continued success.

Alumni @ Miller Canfield Annual Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,500
This scholarship is made possible by the gifts received from various employees at Miller Canfield. Applicants must be full- or part-time second-year students who have a 3.2+ GPA and demonstrate financial need.

Ruth and Mitchell Bacow Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,000
This award was established to honor Mitchell Bacow, '41. It will be awarded to an upper-class law student who has demonstrated the highest professional responsibility and ethical standards.  

Baiardi Family Foundation Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
This scholarship is made possible by the Baiardi Family Foundation to provide financial assistance to academically excellent J.D. students who are residents of the state of Michigan. Students must be full or part time with a minimum GPA of 3.25.

Wayne Budd Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $3,000
This scholarship was established in honor of former Dean Frank H. Wu to recognize scholastic achievement. Applications from part-time evening students enrolled in night classes at Wayne Law will be given preference for this award. Each applicant must be a Detroit resident, a graduate of a Detroit city high school, an active member of the Black Law Students Association and show leadership, promise and potential.

John Cabaniss Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: $2,500
This scholarship honors John Cabaniss, '81, a loyal supporter of Wayne Law. The award will be given to Wayne State University Law School students who have left other careers to pursue law degrees.

Cockrel/Ravitz Memorial Endowed Scholarship and Loan Repayment Award
Award amount: Up to $15,000
This scholarship was established in memory of both Justin Charles Ravitz and Kenneth V. Cockrel Sr. Students who are enrolled full- or part-time and have demonstrated an interest in public interest law will be given preference for this award. This award is based on merit with preference given to an outstanding student who has served, or who has committed to serve, in internships related to public interest law.

Cohen Memorial Endowed Loan Repayment - 5 p.m., April 14, 2017
Award amount: Up to $5,000
The Jerry S. Cohen Memorial Endowed Loan Repayment Fund will provide $5,000 awards for student loan repayment to one or more J.D. graduates who take employment in the field of public interest or public service law and who have outstanding law school student loan debt. The employment requirement includes but isn’t limited to providing legal services where financial sacrifice on behalf of the public interest is genuine, which may include agencies such as the Legal Aid and Defender’s Office; antitrust or consumer welfare bureaus of the attorney general, city or corporation counsel; public interest or service organizations, such as Public Citizen, Public Interest Research Group, Consumer Federation of America, American Civil Liberties Union; and immigration legal aid and nonprofit organizations providing service to the underrepresented, minorities, the elderly or the poor. Students who take state or federal judicial clerkships immediately upon graduating from the Law School aren’t eligible for this scholarship while so employed. F. Philip Colista Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,500
This scholarship was created in memory of F. Philip Colista, '60. Mr. Colista was instrumental in establishing the Free Legal Aid Clinic at Wayne State University. This award will be made to a second-year student who has demonstrated a commitment to using his or her legal skills on behalf of the underprivileged in the community.

John Conyers Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
In tribute to the 50 years of public service served by Congressman John Conyers Jr., '58, this scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement and to encourage continued progress.

William Davidson Endowed Scholarship for Student-Athletes
Award amount: Up to $5,000
This award was established by William Davidson, '49. It will be awarded to a full- or part-time student at the Law School who participated in NCAA intercollegiate or professionally sanctioned sports.

Menendez-Diaz Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
This scholarship was established in memory of George Menendez, '49, and in honor of Dr. Fernando Diaz, '95, for the purpose of recognizing and honoring outstanding law students. Applicants may be full- or part-time students who serve as members in Hispanic organizations, show involvement with the Hispanic community or speak Spanish.

Dighe Family Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: TBD
Students who have participated in an internship or externship in government/public service, non-profit or a non-governmental organization with a public service mission (NGO) in the Washington, D.C. area will receive preference. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Eugene Driker Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
This scholarship was created by Ruth Driker Kroll in honor of her brother, Eugene Driker, '61. The award is intended to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and assist students in financing their legal education. Preference will be given to full- or part-time students who are residents of the City of Detroit and/or have completed their undergraduate studies at Wayne State University.

Erman, Teicher, Miller, Zucker & Freedman PC Endowed Scholarship in Law
Award amount: Up to $1,500
This scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage progress and assist students with their legal education. Applicants may be full- or part-time students seeking assistance in financing their education in Law School.

Freda and Ernest Goodman Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $5,000
This scholarship was established in honor of Freda and Ernest Goodman, a founder of Goodman, Eden, Millender & Bedrosian. The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a substantial interest in, and significant contribution to, the goals of civil rights and social justice exemplified by the professional and public life of Mr. Goodman.

Fishman Stewart, PLLC Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,000
This scholarship was established by the firm of Rader, Fishman & Grauer PLLC, internationally known in the field of intellectual property and a generous supporter and friend of Wayne Law. The award will be made to a full- or part-time law student with high academic performance and an interest in intellectual property, especially patent law. The candidate for this scholarship should have a bachelor’s degree in a technical subject recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or be registered to practice as a patent agent.

Izumi Family Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,500
This scholarship was established by former Dean Frank H. Wu and his wife Carol Izumi to honor the memory of her parents, Shinsuke Edwin and Misao Izumi. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to issues of civil rights and social justice.

Marilyn Kelly Public Interest Scholarship 
Award amount: Up to $13,000
This scholarship was established to assist law students who demonstrate a commitment to engage in public interest legal work during and following their studies and who intend to remain in the state of Michigan after graduation. Applicants must have financial need and a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Barbara Klarman Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $4,000
This scholarship is for students who are accepted as a full-time or part-time student in the Law School, have graduated from a high school within the Detroit Public School system and demonstrate financial need.

Law Alumni Association Annual Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,500
This scholarship is open to full or part-time upper class students who have immediate family members or lineal ancestors who are living or deceased alumni of Wayne Law.

Stephen R. Levine Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $500
This scholarship was established in memory of Stephen R. Levine, '76. The award recognizes scholastic achievement, encourages continued progress and provides assistance to a night school student in the J.D. program with financial need.

Lloyd Twins for Justice Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $5,000
This scholarship was created by the Honorable Leonia J. Lloyd, in memory of her late twin sister, the Honorable Leona L. Lloyd, both '79. Both were teachers in the Detroit Public School system before they enrolled in the Law School. They became the nation's first pair of twins to serve as judges of the same court at one time. They have been known particularly for their innovative handling of criminal matters involving youths and young adults and for encouraging and assisting the young men and women of Detroit to pursue education. The award will be given to a first-year, full-time student currently involved in or holding a leadership position in the Black Law Students Association. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need.

Wade H. McCree Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $12,000
This scholarship was established in memory of the Honorable Wade H. McCree Jr. Applicants may be full- or part-time students from the City of Detroit who have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate integrity and high promise.

Bruce A. Miller Family Endowed Scholarship in Labor Law
Award amount: Up to $1,000
Bruce Miller, '54, established this scholarship honoring the many members of his family who are graduates of Wayne State University. The scholarship seeks to honor and recognize outstanding achievement by students in the field of labor law. Student must be pursuing a J.D. and selection will be based on performance in the following courses: Labor Relations and the Law, Union Democracy, the Labor Law Seminar or another course concerning the rights of employees to belong to unions and engage in collective bargaining.

Judge Claudia House Morcom Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $3,000
This scholarship was established by Judge Morcom as a way to give back to Wayne Law. Applicants must be committed to peace and justice, non-violence, sharing of resources and service with those who share the vision of world optimism and who work to preserve civil and human rights for all people.

George Peck Endowed Scholarship for Superior Advocacy
Award amount: Up to $1,000
This scholarship was established by George Peck, '80, in memory of his late father, Dr. Theodore E. Peck, to recognize dedication to passionate and creative advocacy, intelligent and persuasive oral and written argument, and excellence in public speaking. This award will be given to the student who best exemplifies these traits and demonstrated superior advocacy during the year.

Margaret Sind Raben Annual Scholarship
Award amount: up to $2,600
Margaret Sind Raben created this scholarship to help provide support for this generation of Wayne Law students. The scholarship is to encourage continued progress and to recognize scholastic achievement. Full- and part-time students enrolled at Wayne Law are eligible to apply.

John W. Reed Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $7,000
This scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student chosen by the dean on the basis of academic excellence and evidence of professionalism. The scholarship has been funded primarily by the Fellows of the International Society of Barristers for which former Dean Reed has served as administrator and editor since 1979.

Lewis Rockwell Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $2,000
This scholarship honors Lewis Rockwell, '47. It will be awarded to a part-time student who demonstrates financial need and has a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Richard Rogers Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $500
This endowed scholarship is for an upper-class student who demonstrates significant financial need and is in the top 20 percent of his or her class.

John E.S. Scott Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Trial Advocacy
Award amount: up to $1,000
This scholarship is awarded in memory of John E. S. Scott, '61, who had a distinguished 45-year career as a trial lawyer. The award is given to a student who has excelled in advocacy skills and trial practice at the Law School. Applicants enrolled in Mock Trial (formerly Student Trial Advocacy Program) will be given preference.

Max Smitt Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $1,000
This scholarship was established to honor Max Smitt, an eminent member of the Michigan State Bar, by his sister Helene Warren. The scholarship is need-based and awarded to honor high scholastic achievement of students enrolled in the Wayne Law J.D. program.

Romano Stancroff PC Endowed Scholarship
Award amount: Up to $5,000
This scholarship was established by Mark Romano and Steve Stancroff of Romano Stancroff PC, who both attended Wayne Law School from 1987-1990. While studying at Wayne Law they were influenced by programs such as the Free Legal Aid Clinic and WSU’s urban campus. This scholarship is to encourage students to practice in areas where they can meaningfully contribute as attorneys.

Strategic Staffing Solutions – Damon J. Keith Center Endowed Scholarship 
Award amount: Up to $5,000
This scholarship was established by Strategic Staffing Solutions, an international, woman-owned, $200-million plus IT and business services company based in Detroit, to honor Judge Damon J. Keith and give back to the Detroit community. Applicants must be full- or part-time students who are Detroit residents or have attended high school in the city of Detroit. Students who plan to reside in metro Detroit and exhibit an interest in giving back to the local community through their law degree will be given preference.

A. Albert Sugar Memorial Annual Scholarship
Award amount: TBD
Ruth Beresh created this scholarship in memory of her father, A. Albert Sugar, who was a friend and supporter of the Law School. Mr. Sugar practiced law for more than 50 years and is remembered for his commitment to the ethics and equitable treatment of all people. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has taken a leadership role in the Jewish Law Student Association and who has demonstrated integrity, strong academic achievement and a commitment to the betterment of the community. Applicants need not demonstrate financial need and a minimum GPA is not required.

Alan R. Waterstone Memorial Endowed Scholarship 
Award amount: Up to $500
The Honorable Mary J. Waterstone established this award in honor of her late husband, Alan R. Waterstone, who for 32 years served Wayne State University Law School and its students as adjunct professor of law. Applicants must be from the City of Detroit, have a commitment to the City of Detroit and have academic standing in the top half of their class.

Mark Weiss and M. Jon Posner Memorial Scholarship Fund
Award amount: Up to $20,000
This scholarship honors Mark Weiss and M. Jon Posner, who devoted their legal skills to fight for equal justice by serving the needs of the poor and powerless. It will be awarded to a full-time, part-time or J.D. graduate student who demonstrates an interest in practicing non-governmental public interest law. The award will be made on the basis of merit to an outstanding student who has a proven interest in non-governmental public interest law.

Wayne Law Gives Scholarship
Award Amount: Varies
The Wayne Law Gives Scholarship is a new, need-based scholarship that was established with funds from the Law School’s first Giving Tuesday campaign. To apply, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Submit an essay explaining why the scholarship is needed
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Must not have been offered a scholarship through the admissions process

The Torgow Scholarship Fund
Award Amount: Varies
This scholarship is to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress and to provide assistance to students accepted into the Wayne State University Law School. Eligible students must have graduated from a public high school, including public charter high school, within Wayne or Oakland County, Michigan.

Carl Ziemba Endowed Scholarship
Award Amount: Varies
The Carl Ziemba Endowed Scholarship is to recognize scholastic achievement and provide assistance to students in financing their legal education. Applications will be accepted from students who meet the following criteria: enrolled full or part-time, completed their undergraduate studies at Wayne State University, demonstrated financial need and have a minimum GPA of a 3.0. Students who have participated, taken classes, attended seminars or volunteered for services related to public interest, as well as those who have participated in the Free Legal Aid Clinic, will be given preference.
