Program for International Legal Studies hosts open house Sept. 21

September 13, 2011

DETROIT (Sept. 13, 2011) — Wayne State University Law School’s Program for International Legal Studies will host “From Amsterdam to Mumbai: An Evening with the Wayne Law Program for International Legal Studies” at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium.

Featuring Michael Cone, '94, and other Wayne Law alumni speaking about their careers in international law, the event will serve as an open house and celebrate the many achievements of the program, which was created in 2009. Attendees will hear from faculty experts on issues such as management of Great Lakes water resources, trends in national tax law worldwide, circumstances in which territories may secede from a sovereign state, and changing jurisdictional standards in international cases. Wayne Law students who worked and studied abroad over the summer in India, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, the Netherlands and elsewhere will share their experiences. The event will also feature law firm sponsors of student fellowships.

“The international program at Wayne Law is unique in Michigan and we are very proud of its many achievements in only two years of operation,” said Gregory Fox, Wayne Law professor and director of the Program for International Legal Studies. “This open house will showcase the people and initiatives that have already made it a great success.”

He added, “Many first year students say they came to Wayne Law because of the international opportunities we offer. Having such enthusiastic students only adds to the program’s dynamism.”

The event also will provide an opportunity for program representatives to officially announce the 2011-12 Speaker Series.

“Our annual Speaker Series brings world renowned experts to our campus to address some of the most pressing issues in international law today,” Fox said. “We look forward to announcing our 2011-12 lineup and welcoming Wayne Law students, alumni and friends to the lectures.”

The open house is part of Wayne Law’s International Law Week, Sept. 19-23, a series of events aimed at informing Wayne Law students, alumni, practicing lawyers and friends about recent news, developments and opportunities in international law.

Program for International Legal Studies
Wayne Law created the Program for International Legal Studies in recognition of the breadth of the faculty’s international engagements and expertise, and the fact that nearly all aspects of law now have an international component. From regulation of cross-border financial transactions to controlling pollution that recognizes no boundaries to human rights treaties that regulate how governments treat their citizens, law is now an interconnected global phenomenon. The program coordinates all activities at Wayne Law related to international law. These activities include hosting the Speaker Series, sponsoring conferences and symposia featuring leading international scholars and practitioners, promoting research on international and comparative law topics, and providing important resources for Wayne Law students, alumni and friends interested in international law.
