Law School Honors Convocation Celebrates Students Success
Wayne State University Law School celebrated the successes of its students on Friday, November 17, 2006 at the annual Honors Convocation ceremony.
Over 70 scholarships and awards were given to students. Eligibility for the awards is determined by academic success, involvement in Law School and community activities, financial need, or future career interests.
Some of the endowed awards have been given out for many years but a number of new scholarships were awarded for the first time this year. The American Corporate Counsel Scholarship Award was made to Amanda J. Barkey for high academic achievement in corporate law classes. The Bush Seyferth Kethledge & Paige Trial Advocacy Scholarship was given to Jonathan R. Schulz, a student who intends a career in litigation. The William Davidson Endowed Scholarship for Student Athletes, given to Haley S. Slade, was also a new scholarship this year, as was the A. Albert Sugar Memorial Scholarship, awarded to Evan N. Leibhan.
A number of the donors were present; they were also invited to a reception before the ceremony, so they could meet the student or students who were benefiting from the award the donor made possible.
Because last year’s event was such a success, this year’s ceremony was held in the larger Community Arts Auditorium on the WSU campus, instead of in the Law School’s own Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. The move was justified as over 300 people attended.
Each year, the Law School also honors a graduate of superior ability who graduated before 1984; this person receives the Honorary Order of the Coif award. This year’s recipient is David M. Hempstead, a Partner in the Detroit office of Bodman LLP. He graduated from the Law School, magna cum laude, in 1975. Mr. Hempstead concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of income, estate and gift tax planning for high net-worth individuals, estate and trust administration, trust litigation and charitable trusts and foundations. He is also vice chairman of Bodman’s Executive Committee.
The Law School would like to congratulate all the students on their achievements. Photos from the event will be posted on the Law School’s website in the near future and a complete list of awards, donors and recipients will be published in the Law School’s annual alumni magazine, The Wayne Lawyer.
