When Beijing lawyer John Chu, LL.M. ’01, was presented with an opportunity to transfer to General Motors (GM) headquarters in Detroit from Beijing in 1999, he took advantage of it. The experience allowed him to learn about how Americans do business and the American legal system – knowledge that has made him a highly sought-after attorney in Beijing.

Recent LL.M. alumni accomplishments:

  • Judge Damon J. Keith, LL.M. '56, received the Neal Shine Award for Exemplary Regional Leadership.
  • Ashley S. Lipson, '78, LL.M., will release a second first-of-its-kind casebook in February 2011 via Carolina Academic Press. Computer & Video Game Law was released in 2010. Mathematics, Physics and Finance For The Legal Profession will be released in February 2011. Lipson, a professor, has published eight books and more than 70 articles and earned an M.A. in mathematics from Wayne State University.
  • Charles E. Turnbull, '78, LL.M. 1986, was  sworn in as president of the Macomb County Bar Association (MCBA). Turnbull will serve as the 82nd president of MCBA.
  • Lee Hornberger, LL.M, '82, of the Arbitration and Mediation Office of Lee Hornberger, was elected to the Representative Assembly of the State Bar of Michigan. The Assembly is the final policy-making body of the State Bar.
  • Kathleen Wilson-Thompson, '82, LL.M. 1996, was appointed senior vice president and chief human resources officer of Walgreens.
  • Mark A. Davis, '91, LL.M., president and CEO of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC, was named to DBusiness Top Lawyers 2011.
  • Kurt Heise, '91, LL.M. 1993, was elected to the Michigan State House. He will represent the 20th House District (Northville, Plymouth, Wayne and Canton east of I-275). He also serves as an adjunct professor in WSU's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and as a consultant for the WSU Urban Watershed Enviromental Research Group (UWERG).   
  • Jess A. Bahs, '92, LL.M. 1998, of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC, was named to DBusiness Top Lawyers 2011.
  • Joseph J. DeVito, '95, LL.M. 2005, of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC, was named to DBusiness Top Lawyers 2011.
  • Eric T. Carver, '97, LL.M., of Dykema, was elected secretary and treasurer of the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metropolitan Detroit (FEPCMD), effective Jan. 1, 2011. He was also ranked by his peers as a leader in trusts and estates in the 2010 edition of Best Lawyers in America.
  • Michael J. Thomas, '10, LL.M., joined the Carrillo Law Firm PC, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, as a senior attorney.
