He discussed the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court cases involving same-sex marriage and their impact on the challenge to Michigan's ban on same sex marriage. He said the Court could hold that there is no constitutional right to same-sex marriage, that there is a constitutional right to same sex-marriage, so that laws like Michigan's ban on same sex marriage are unconstitutional, or it could simply decide the cases before it. Later that morning Sedler did an interview with Jorge Avellan of TV 20 for the evening news on the emergency financial manager in Detroit. He said that since the earlier law was set aside on a referendum, in order for the new law to be constitutional, it had to be substantially different and less sweeping than the older law. Sedler also discussed possible constitutional questions that would arise if the emergency financial manager abrogated existing collective bargaining agreements or effectively set aside existing Detroit ordinances. He emphasized that local governments are creatures of the state, so that the state can regulate them, but also has responsibility for them, particularly Detroit, which is the most important city in the state.
