Winter/Spring 2011

Community Outreach Project
Southwest Housing Solutions organized a fun filled work day in Southwest Detroit: the Neighborhood Beautification Day took place on Saturday, June 11 from 8 a.m.-noon. This year, the event also coincided with “Catch the Spirit” in southwest Detroit. This is a new community pride and responsibility campaign by Mayor Bing’s office that engages residents and volunteers to clean and beautify neighborhoods. Volunteers worked in teams to plant flowers, paint fences, clear lots, and spruce up the Mexicantown Mercado area.
 
Know your Rights Immigration Taskforce Training
Training event with presentations from Prof. Rachel Settlage, Wayne State University Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic; Mike Kelly, from Amnesty International; and Ryan Bates from the Alliance for Immigrants Rights. Attendees joined and immigration rights taskforce and learned how to conduct Immigration Know Your Rights presentations.

HLSA Bike Ride
A leisurely bike ride in the Detroit Riverfront and Belle Isle followed by complimentary snacks and beverages. An Event for all Wayne State University Law School students to de-stress before finals
 
2011 Detroit Polar Plunge
The Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity to support Special Olympics athletes by taking a flying leap – a leap into the frigid waters of a Michigan lake. Participants raised at least $50 in donations from friends, family and co-workers get the privilage to  jump into the icy waters in the middle of winter. All proceeds collected by plungers went to Special Olympics Michigan athletes. In 2010, nearly $480,000 was raised by more than 2,000 plungers. Wayne Law students created a team that included HLSA members!
 
2011 Martin Luther King Day of Caring
Wayne State University and Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights have teamed up with the United Way for the 2011 MLK Day of Caring. 
 
313 Project Bake-Sale
All proceeds went to the Salvation Army Latin America effort providing support to the survivors of the floors and mudslides in 4 cities surrounding Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which happened in January 2011.
 

Fall 2010

313 Project Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program
Fundraising, bake-sale, shopping day, and gift giving day for 20 needy children in Detroit.

HLSA also adopted a low income family in Southwest Detroit this year in partnership with Southwest Solutions.
 
313 Project Canned Food Donations
The 313 Project donated over $300 in canned goods to Freedom House, Piquette Square and to a low-income family in Southwest Detroit.
The canned goods were obtained for free during the shooting of the 313 Project commercial.

HBAM Pro-Bono Day - Oct. 22
HLSA members volunteered at the HBAM Pro-Bono Day. We helped serve the legal needs of over 70 people.

313 Project Bake Sale TAMALES & DIMSUM and La Vida Scarf/Art-Work Sale
Proceeds to La Vida, Korean Kids & Orphanage Outreach Mission, and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
