Southwest Housing Solutions organized a fun filled work day in Southwest Detroit: the Neighborhood Beautification Day took place on Saturday, June 11 from 8 a.m.-noon. This year, the event also coincided with “Catch the Spirit” in southwest Detroit. This is a new community pride and responsibility campaign by Mayor Bing’s office that engages residents and volunteers to clean and beautify neighborhoods. Volunteers worked in teams to plant flowers, paint fences, clear lots, and spruce up the Mexicantown Mercado area.
Training event with presentations from Prof. Rachel Settlage, Wayne State University Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic; Mike Kelly, from Amnesty International; and Ryan Bates from the Alliance for Immigrants Rights. Attendees joined and immigration rights taskforce and learned how to conduct Immigration Know Your Rights presentations.
