Biography

Professor White received a B.S.E. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University in 1988, a J.D. degree from the University of Washington in 1991, and a LL.M. degree in Intellectual Property Law from the George Washington University National Law Center in 1996. After graduating from law school, Professor White served on active duty in the Honor's Program of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps as the Corps of Engineers' Intellectual Property Counsel.  After leaving active duty, she clerked for the Honorable Randall R. Rader, Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  She received the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award for 1999-2000,  hosted by the Max Planck Institute Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law in Munich, Germany. Elected in November 1998 and re-elected in 2006, Professor White currently serves as a member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents. In addition, she serves as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army reserves. She is the reserve Deputy Commander and Associate Dean of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School (JAG School) at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. In addition, she is a registered patent attorney and serves as Vice President of the Fulbright Association.  In August 2000, Professor White was  appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO)  Patent Public Advisory Committee.  This committee has nine voting members to advise the Director of the PTO on agency goals, operations, performance, budget, and user fees.  In 2001-2002,  Professor White served as the White House Fellow assigned to the Secretary of Agriculture, Ann M. Veneman, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Professor White was engaged in intellectual property and international trade issues surrounding agriculture and biotechnology, as well as homeland security matters.

Recent Accomplishments
  • June 1, 2009
    Katherine White received the 2009 Woman of Achievement Award at the Vista Maria Celebrating Women event on May 7, 2009. She was honored for being a role model for young women.
  • October 15, 2008
    Katherine White just published the third edition of her book, co-authored with Wayne Law alumnus Eric Dobrusin.     Katherine White was re-elected to the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan on November 7.
  • August 23, 2006
    Katherine White was elected to serve as the Vice President of the Fulbright Association in 2006. She has served on that Board since 2005. Her article, "Preserving the Patenting Process in the Global Economy", was published in the Syracuse Science and Technology Law Reporter earlier this spring (http://www.law.syr.edu/students/publications/sstlr/framesets/archive/current/S05-ArtSum.htm). She has published two articles on intellectual property and government contracting in the Army Lawyer Contract and Fiscal Law Developments of 2005-Year in Review, Department of the Army Pamphlet 27-50-392(January 2006). Major White was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.
