Faculty Accomplishments April 2009

Assistant Professor of Law Jocelyn Benson will serve as the guest speaker at the Ann Arbor Community Center's 2nd annual Dinner and Dance on April 24, 2009. This gala will be held at the AACC, with the theme "Changing Lives and Transforming Communities since 1923." Hundreds of youth, from low to moderate income families have benefited from the Summer Day Camp and much of the proceeds will go toward this effort. Assistant Professor of Law Susan Cancelosi was an invited presenter at the John Marshall Law School's 7th annual Employee Benefits Symposium. This year's Symposium focused on legal issues affecting public sector employee benefits, and Professor Cancelosi's presentation was titled "VEBAs to the Rescue?"

Assistant Professor of Law Jocelyn Benson will be a featured speaker at the Promoting Michigan Voter Power conference at Henry Ford Community College on April 24, 2009. The conference is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Michigan (LWVMI) and HFCC. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about election-related issues and discuss ways to make voting easier and reduce the influence of special interests in elections.

Associate Professor of Law Linda Beale has been appointed Vice Chair of the Committee on Standards of Tax Practice for a two-year term starting July 1. Her selection as a Committee Vice Chair and a part of the Section of Taxation's leadership for 2009-2010 represents recognition by her peers of her abilities and contributions to the work of the Section.

Professor of Law Peter Henning spoke at the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section program, "Ethics, Politics and Public Corruption," held in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 3, 2009. He was a member of the panel on "Trying the Public Corruption Case."

Walter S. Gibbs Professor of Constitutional Law Steven Winter participated in the 12th Annual Law, Culture & the Humanities Conference, which was held at the Suffolk Law School, Boston, MA. He presented his "Law, Culture, and Humility" chapter as part of a panel on "Aesthetics, Democracy, and Law" and served as chair and discussant for the panel on "Law and Religion."

Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor (Clinical) David Moss presented a paper titled "Disability Parking Privileges and the Elderly" at Marquette University Law School's Symposium on The Convergence of Elder and Disability Policy.
