Faculty Accomplishments January 2009

Distinguished Professor of Law Robert Sedler made a presentation at a program sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan, "36 Years of Women's Choice," on Jan. 22, 2009. The day marked the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, and Professor Sedler spoke on the legal aspects of reproductive choice. Before teaching at Wayne Law, Professor Sedler litigated the Kentucky version of Roe vs. Wade for the Kentucky ACLU.

Distinguished Professor of Law Robert Sedler taped an interview with Greg Bowman at WWJ-AM on Roe v. Wade, the "Freedom of Choice" Act, no pending in Congress, and President Obama's power to lift a Bush restriction on providing federal funds for contraception to an international organization that also performs abortions.

Professor of Law Jonathan Weinberg will publish a book review, The End of Citizenship?, in 2009 in the Michigan Law Review.

Associate Professor of Law Linda Beale organized and participated in a competitive "open source" program at the AALS annual meeting (Jan. 9, 2009, in San Diego) on "The business of tax patents."

Dean and Professor of Law Robert Ackerman will be interviewed during half-time as a featured guest at the Wayne State University Warrior's men's basketball game vs. Ashland on Jan. 31, 2009.

Professor of Law Alan Schenk was a panelist on two panels for the Committee on VAT and Other Consumption Taxes in connection with the American Bar Association Section of Taxation meeting in New Orleans on Jan. 9, 2009. He compared the Model VAT (on which he served as reporter) with a proposed new VAT for the United States. He also discussed various approaches to the taxation of financial services under a value added tax, if Congress considers a new revenue source to finance new federal programs or to pay down the federal budget deficit.

Assistant Professor of Law Noah Hall contributed a section on water law reform in the Great Lakes region for the annual "Year in Review" (2008), published jointly by Energy Law Journal and American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources.

Assistant Professor of Law Lance Gable published a chapter with coauthor James G. Hodge Jr. titled "Public Health Law and Biological Terrorism," in Beyond Anthrax: The Weaponization of Infectious Diseases 239-252. (Larry I. Lutwick & Suzanne M. Lutwick eds.).

Professor of Law Jonathan Weinberg organized a panel discussion on "Immigration, Databases, Credentials, and Privacy" at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Association of Law Schools. At that meeting, he stepped down as chair of the AALS Defamation and Privacy section and began a year as chair of the section on Mass Communications Law.
