Faculty Accomplishments November 2008

Professor of Law Stephen Calkins testified on "The History of Section 5: 1972 to Present," at an FTC Workshop on Section 5 of the FTC Act as a Competition Statute (Washington, D.C., Oct. 17, 2008).

He was one of four principal lecturers at the Antitrust Masters Course IV (The Homestead, Virginia, Sept. 25-28, 2008).

His co-authored Antitrust Law and Economics in a Nutshell has been translated into Spanish by the Mexican Competition Commission, USAID and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. Its Spanish title is Derecho y Economía de la Competencia.

Assistant Professor of Law Noah Hall spoke at a symposium in Los Angeles on Oct. 3, 2008, on "Arctic Sovereignty: Cold Facts, Hot Issues," discussing the how the United States and Canada's history of cooperation in freshwater protection could be a model for managing Arctic resources and shipping as the region opens up from climate change.

Professor of Law Alan Schenk wrote a column on "The Credit Crisis and the Value Added Tax Administrative Rules," which was scheduled to appear in the next issue of the International VAT Monitor published by the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation. He is also now on the editorial board of that periodical.

Distinguished Professor of Law Robert Sedler was a guest on the Warren Piece show, WJR-AM, discussing the constitutional role of the vice president. This was in response to some statements Sarah Palin made about what she would do as vice president.

He gave his annual constitutional law update to the State of Michigan Court of Appeals on Nov. 13, 2008.

On Nov. 13, he joined Detroit Free Press columnist Brian Dickerson for an Election 2008 Wrap Up for the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section. The program was held at the NCJW office in Southfield.
