Faculty Accomplishments September 2007

Assistant Professor of Law Noah Hall Assistant Professor of Law, was invited to present a paper on "Political Externalities, Federalism, and a Proposal for an Interstate Environmental Impact Assessment Policy" at the inaugural Harvard Law School Environmental Law Faculty Workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts, June 13, 2007.

Hall co-authored a casebook supplement and update to the Teacher's Manual for ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND POLICY: NATURE, LAW, AND SOCIETY (Aspen) and will be co-authoring the next edition due to be published next fall.

Hall also successfully represented a bipartisan group of state lawmakers in a Constitutional challenge to a state law intended to prevent biological pollution in the Great Lakes. See Fednav, Ltd. v. Chester, --- F.Supp.2d ----, 2007 WL 2336072 (E.D.Mich. 2007). He was later invited to discuss this litigation at the Council of State Governments Midwest Annual Meeting in Traverse City, Mich., Aug. 25, 2007.

Assistant Professor (Clinical) Dana Roach Thompson Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Damon J. Keith Law Collection of African-American Legal History, was among the 65 professionals selected to participate in Leadership Detroit's Class XXIX.

Over 1,600 regional leaders have completed the program including such notables as Governor Jennifer Granholm, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and DTE Energy Vice Chairman Stephen Ewing.

"Leadership Detroit regularly attracts the finest leaders from around the Detroit Region," said Dick Blouse Jr., President and CEO, Detroit Regional Chamber. "This year was no exception."

Founded in 1979, Leadership Detroit provides the foundation for a lifelong commitment to leadership by creating awareness of key issues that affect the Detroit Region and challenges emerging and existing community leaders to bring about positive change in the community through informed leadership. Leadership Detroit is a program of the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Legal Writing Instructor Amy Neville Legal Research and Writing Lecturer, recently published "Over-commenting - Why Do We Do It and How Can We Cure It?" in The Second Draft (Legal Writing Inst.) Vol. 22, No. 1, Fall 2007.

Professor of Law Alan Schenk Professor of Law, co-authored two of the chapters of "Value Added Tax in Africa," a book to be used by tax authorities, practitioners, and academics in African countries with value added taxes. He used this material in a course (team-taught) in the African Tax Institute in Pretoria, South Africa in June, 2007.
