Business and Community Law Clinic

For students

The Business and Community Law Clinic is Wayne Law's transactional clinic. The clinic prepares students for real-world practice, combining weekly seminars with representation of real-world for-profit clients who cannot afford to pay for legal services offered by attorneys in the private bar. In the course of representations, students will act as counselors in the truest sense of the word, advising on both business and legal matters. In addition to direct client representation, clinic students also engage in research and other activities that support entrepreneurship in Detroit.

The legal services provided vary from semester to semester based on client needs. Among the services the clinic offers are:

  • Contract review and preparation
  • Entity formation
  • Preparation of trademark and copyright applications
  • Review and drafting of commercial real estate documents

Since the clinic began serving clients in 2007, it has provided legal assistance to dozens of for-profit clients, including record labels, a day spa, technology companies, a bath and body care manufacturer and a financial literacy company.

The Business and Community Law Clinic isn't offering any student positions during fall 2016 and winter 2017.

"Wayne State University Law School has given me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Detroit's residents through various student organizations' community service efforts in the city and by advocating for Detroiters as a student attorney with the Business and Community Law Clinic and Free Legal Aid Clinic."
