Wayne Law mourns death of civil rights activist Chokwe Lumumba
Wayne State University Law School offers condolences to the family of Chokwe Lumumba, class of 1975, who died Tuesday, Feb. 25. He was 66.
Lumumba, a longtime civil rights activist, was elected mayor of Jackson, Miss., in July and was honored in January by the Detroit and Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
Services are planned for this weekend in Jackson.
“Chokwe Lumumba decided early in his life that he could bring change and best serve the civil rights movement as a lawyer. He earned his law degree cum laude at Wayne Law, but he was a political activist by the time he was a teenager,” Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson said. “We will miss this civil rights champion.”
