  • Rachel SmithRachel Smith, '10, has been hired by Brooks Kushman P.C. in Southfield. Specializing in preparing and prosecuting patent applications, Smith will add depth to Brooks Kushman's nationally recognized patent practice. Smith also previously practiced at Rader Fishman & Grauer prior to joining Brooks Kushman. Her experience goes beyond the patent prosecution arena and includes patent litigation, patent licensing and negotiations thereof, as well as freedom to operate and opinion work. Smith's practice is primarily focused in the automotive, electronics and medical device industries. Smith has prosecuted numerous domestic and foreign patent applications relating to medical devices. She has also performed due diligence and provided strategy and counseling to several medical supply companies.

  • John WrightJohn Wright, '10, joined Rogers Mantese & Associates as an attorney.  He is joining the firm after serving as an assistant attorney general in the Michigan Department of Attorney General. While there, he represented state agencies, including the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Notably, Wright represented the Health Professions Division of the Bureau of Health Care Services in matters involving licensed health care professionals. He also provided legal advice to state boards and commissions that oversee licensing of health care professionals. While in the Attorney General's Office, Wright was awarded the Michigan Attorney General's Staff Excellence in "Opinion Draftsmanship" Award and the Michigan Attorney General's "Rookie of the Year" Award. He also completed a Public Health Law Fellowship sponsored by the National Attorneys General Training & Research Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Aquart helps to ensure that HRA maintains a respectful work environment, makes employment decisions fairly and with equal opportunity, and makes reasonable accommodations for qualified employees. In his role at HRA, Aquart oversees investigations of discrimination, harassment and retaliation complaints and the implementation of reasonable accommodations.

She also was awarded the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan Justice for All Award for her work investigating convictions involving the now closed Detroit Crime Lab.

  • Michael TaylorMichael Taylor, '08, was confirmed as mayor of Sterling Heights to serve out the term of RIchard Notte, who died in October. Taylor was first elected to the council at 2009 when he was 26 -- the youngest person to be elected to the council in the city's history. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2013 with the highest number of votes, earning him the mayor pro-tem position. Taylor is a senior attorney with the Mount Clemens-based law firm of Davis Burket Savage Listman Brennan, where he represents individuals and businesses on a wide range of civil matters, focusing on civil litigation, corporate law, estate planning and property tax appeals.

The center is an evidence-based program that improves outcomes for children by safely reducing the need for them to enter or remain in foster care. The center uses legal and social work advocacy to empower families to overcome the underlying problems they are facing that put the children in their care at risk for out of home placements. Riley has served as pro bono counsel for Legal Services of Michigan, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, the Michigan State Planning Body for Legal Services and the American Civil Liberties Union.

  • Robert FerganRobert Fergan, '02, was appointed editor in chief of Landslide magazine, a bi-monthly magazine of the American Bar Association's Section of Intellectual Property Law that offers news and analysis on patents, trademarks, copyrights and related topics. He has served on the editorial board since 2005.  He is a shareholder in the Ann Arbor office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S. At Brinks, Fergan specializes in client counseling, licensing and patent prosecution in the United States and other countries under the rules of the Patent Cooperation Treaty. He has prepared and prosecuted patents in the electrical, mechanical, optical, and computer science arts, as well as, patents related to business methods. Prior to joining Brinks in 2003, Fergan spent 10 years in the machine vision and optical inspection industry as a product development manager and product marketing manager, gaining experience with many industries and technologies, including semi-conductor, electronics, automotive, pharmaceutical, packaging, metrology, instrumentation and optics. Fergan is a member of the American Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law Section and Business Law Section. He is also active in the State Bar of Michigan, where he previously served on the Board of Commissioners.  Fergan is a contributing author of the third edition of the Brinks intellectual property law primer, The Basic Principles of Intellectual Property Law, and is an adjunct professor at Thomas Cooley Law School in Ann Arbor

  • Joshua ArnkoffJoshua Arnkoff, '01, joined Southfield-based Collins Einhorn Farrell. Arnkoff will concentrate his practice on the defense of professional liability claims and the defense of general liability matters. The Bloomfield Township resident came to the firm from the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, where, in the course of his 10-year career there, he tried dozens of jury and bench trials. Additionally, he taught classes at the Oakland County Police Academy (Admissions & Confessions, Evidence) and taught legal updates to the local police agencies. Given his background, Arnkoff also will practice in the area of white collar criminal defense.

He is a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP. He'll serve on the 15-member board for the nonprofit group, which was established in 2007 as a joint initiative of the U.S. State Department  and leading national law firms to empower Afghan lawyers to contribute to the establishment of the rule of law in their nation. The organization administers a program of scholarships for Afghan legal scholars. Ghaussi has a diverse litigation practice with his law firm.

  • Derek MeineckeDerek Meinecke, '01, was appointed chief judge of the 44th District Court. Meinecke won election to the court in 2012, after serving for more than 10 years in the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in the special victims unit, focusing on domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse and sexual assault. In 2011, he won the Courage to Lead Award from Oakland County S.A.V.E. (Serving Adults who are Vulnerable and/or Elderly) for his efforts to prevent elder abuse, and in 2009 he awarded the Domestic Violence Prevention Award from Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence for his work to end domestic violence, prosecute abusers, empower victims and educate police officers and members of the community about the dynamics of abuse.

The Michigan Bar Journal awarded Rossman second place for his short story fiction, "The Last Bullet," which examines the questions and contradictions inherent in an act of vigilante justice.
