Thomas Hatch
Thomas Hatch '91, is managing director of Northfield Capital Partners, and advised Meidu Holding Co. Ltd. in the Dec. 4 $535 million acquisition of Woodbine Acquisition Corp. from Woodbine Holdings LLC. This represented the first acquisition of a 100 percent working interest in oil assets in the United States by a Chinese venture. Woodbine Acquisition LLC is a United States-based company engaged in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas, holding over 15,000 acres of mineral leases in the Texas, Woodbine Sand. Meidu Holding Co. Ltd. is a China-based, privately owned company traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and is principally engaged in the development and operation of real estate, as well as the operation of a trading business.

Rick Snyder as one of 15 appointments to the newly created Indigent Defense Commission, which aims to improve legal representation for low-income criminal defendants. The board collects data necessary for the review of indigent defense services in Michigan, and creates standards and requirements. Boyd is chief judge of the 55th District Court, and will represent members submitted by the Michigan District Judges Association.

The program, which is designed to serve as an alternative to incarceration, provides intense supervision, substance abuse treatment, readjustment counseling and mentoring with military veterans who can relate to combat experiences.

David Thoms '88, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Federation of Alliances Françaises -USA Inc. His term will expire in 2016. He was also elected as the board's vice president for a one-year term. The Federation of Alliances Françaises-USA is a cooperative organization dedicated to "the promotion of understanding the French language, literature, history and culture to the francophone and Francophile" This national organization supports more than 100 local chapters in the United States. Thoms is a principal with Miller Canfield, and has been a leader in the French-American community for years. His service includes being a longtime board member and current president of the Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe and a past president of the French Festival of Detroit. He is a former board member and past president of the Federation of Alliances Françaises-USA and a current board member of the American Society of the French Academic Palms. He was awarded the Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French Government for his contributions to French culture and education.

Phillip Korovesis
Phillip Korovesis '87, was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the State Bar of Michigan Negligence Council. Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, shareholder Korovesis is a Litigation Practice Group leader and also serves as the chair of Butzel Long's Trade Secret and Non-Compete Specialty Team, which focuses on trade secret, non-compete and business tort litigation. His practice is focused on commercial disputes, with trial, litigation and consultation expertise in non-compete/trade secret disputes, product liability defense, life insurance claims and business and financial services industry disputes. Korovesis has successfully tried cases in state and federal courts in various parts of the country and represented clients in state and federal appellate courts. He has arbitrated cases before the American Arbitration Association, the National Association of Securities Dealers, and the New York Stock Exchange (now The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). He is a regular presenter on trade secret and non-compete issues to lawyers and other professionals. Korovesis also serves on the Board of Directors of Leadership Oakland. He is the past president of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel. Korovesis is an active member of the Defense Research Institute on its Commercial Litigation Committee.
