Nanci Grant '89, was named as one of the metropolitan area's top circuit court judges by DBusiness magazine in its January/February 2014 edition. The top judges were selected via a poll of 18,200 attorneys. Grant is a judge with Oakland County Circuit Court.

Donald Campbell '89, was invited to speak at the International Association of Defense Counsel's Professional Liability Roundtable on May 8 at University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Campbell will be among the speakers for a session focusing on "Hot Topics in Attorney-Client Privilege." Campbell, a partner at Collins Einhorn, focuses his practice on attorney grievance defense, representation in judicial tenure matters and legal malpractice defense.

Nanci Grant
Nanci Grant '89, was profiled in the Detroit Legal News for founding the Oakland County Combat Veterans Treatment Court, the first of its kind in Michigan. The program, which is designed to serve as an alternative to incarceration, provides intense supervision, substance abuse treatment, readjustment counseling and mentoring with military veterans who can relate to combat experiences.

The WONder Woman award recognizes women who have improved the quality of life in Southeast Michigan through their civic, philanthropic, and professional accomplishments. In recognition of the award, Grant also received a special tribute from Gov. Rick Snyder and the Ninety-Eighth Congress. The Women's Official Network's mission is to celebrate women who have contributed in meaningful ways and have forged paths of leadership and to inspire girls and women to achieve their full potential.

David Thoms '88, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Federation of Alliances Françaises -USA Inc. His term will expire in 2016. He was also elected as the board's vice president for a one-year term. The Federation of Alliances Françaises-USA is a cooperative organization dedicated to "the promotion of understanding the French language, literature, history and culture to the francophone and Francophile" This national organization supports more than 100 local chapters in the United States. Thoms is a principal with Miller Canfield, and has been a leader in the French-American community for years. His service includes being a longtime board member and current president of the Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe and a past president of the French Festival of Detroit. He is a former board member and past president of the Federation of Alliances Françaises-USA and a current board member of the American Society of the French Academic Palms. He was awarded the Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French Government for his contributions to French culture and education.

Phillip Korovesis
Phillip Korovesis '87, was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the State Bar of Michigan Negligence Council. Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, shareholder Korovesis is a Litigation Practice Group leader and also serves as the chair of Butzel Long's Trade Secret and Non-Compete Specialty Team, which focuses on trade secret, non-compete and business tort litigation. His practice is focused on commercial disputes, with trial, litigation and consultation expertise in non-compete/trade secret disputes, product liability defense, life insurance claims and business and financial services industry disputes. Korovesis has successfully tried cases in state and federal courts in various parts of the country and represented clients in state and federal appellate courts. He has arbitrated cases before the American Arbitration Association, the National Association of Securities Dealers, and the New York Stock Exchange (now The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). He is a regular presenter on trade secret and non-compete issues to lawyers and other professionals. Korovesis also serves on the Board of Directors of Leadership Oakland. He is the past president of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel. Korovesis is an active member of the Defense Research Institute on its Commercial Litigation Committee.

Teresa Stanek Rea '80, has rejoined Crowell & Moring as a partner in the intellectual property group, leaving from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where she has worked for nearly three years, most recently serving as the acting director. In addition to being a partner in Crowell & Moring, Rea also joins as a director atC&M International Ltd., the international trade and investment consulting firm affiliated with Crowell & Moring. Rea said she developed contacts in those areas during her roles as deputy director and, later, acting director of the USPTO. At the USPTO, Rea was the senior official responsible for the administration's formulation and implementation of U.S. intellectual property policies, including patent, copyright, and trade secret issues. She met with the heads of patent offices with other countries throughout the world. Rea, who is a licensed pharmacist, originally joined Crowell & Moring as a partner in January 2008 from Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. She left to join the USPTO in February 2011.

Jury selection began Sept. 8, 2014, and the final verdict was rendered Aug. 3, 2015. The trial arose out of a fatal construction crane collapse that occurred on May 30, 2008. The jury awarded his clients $56 million in damages.

Marshal E. Hyman '80, prevailed in a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit decision, which will have a significant impact for immigration practice. Applying the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Johnson v. United States, which held that the Armed Career Criminal Act's residual definition of the term "violent felony" was void for vagueness, the Sixth Circuit held that the Immigration and Nationality Act's definition of "crime of violence" which expressly incorporates the 18 USC 16(b) definition of "crime of violence" is unconstitutionally vague. Accordingly, the court granted the petition for review, vacated the order of removal and remanded the case for proceedings consistent with its opinion. Read the full opinion here.
